Mirage

you see me,

I am that ethereal shimmer
dancing on the horizon
the promise of water
in a land of endless thirst

you witness the smoke and mirrors
and come running
your body gasping
for quenching I will not part with

the closer you come
the further I fade
a ghost of satisfaction
in the drought of your longing

but it is not your fault
or mine
for this is what I was made to be
a trick of the light
a dream of the desperate

then I vanish into my dunes
and you stay parched
searching for satiety in the sand
of my mirage build on false hope

you unsee me.
